What is Testing & Assessment?
Understanding yourself starts with the right information.
A psychological assessment is a structured clinical evaluation that uses validated, standardized tools to build a detailed and accurate picture of how you think, feel, process information, and function in daily life. Where therapy is an ongoing, exploratory process, an assessment is diagnostic and informational — its purpose is to identify what is present, clarify what is driving your symptoms, and produce concrete findings that guide the most effective treatment path forward.
At TrueMe® Counseling, assessments are not a gatekeeping exercise. They are one of the most genuinely useful tools we offer — for individuals who want a clearer understanding of themselves, for families seeking answers about a child’s development or behavior, and for anyone whose treatment has felt uncertain or misaligned without a clear clinical picture to guide it. Findings are always discussed in detail, alongside specific recommendations for treatment and next steps.
Our Testing process
Step 1: Initial Consultation
We gather background information, discuss your concerns, and confirm which assessment is the right fit for your needs.
Step 2: Assessment
Using CBT and other evidence-based modalities, we help you identify and challenge the distorted thinking patterns that have been keeping you stuck — whether that’s anxiety, depression, low self-worth, or relationship difficulties. This is not about positive thinking. It is about accurate thinking — learning to recognize the automatic beliefs and mental shortcuts that are shaping how you feel and behave, and replacing them with responses that are grounded in reality rather than fear. You learn to respond to life differently, from the inside out.
Step 3: Treatment Planning
Based on your results, a personalized treatment plan is developed that addresses your specific needs and goals.
Step 4: Therapy Sessions
Your findings are reviewed with you in full detail — with clear explanations, recommendations, and next steps.
Step 5: Follow-Up & Review
Ongoing follow-up ensures progress is monitored and the treatment plan is adjusted as needed over time.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About Testing & Assessment
Honest answers from our licensed therapists — before you take the first step.
1. What is the difference between a psychological assessment and a therapy session?
A psychological assessment and a therapy session serve different but complementary purposes. A therapy session is an ongoing, exploratory process focused on healing, growth, and behavioral change over time. An assessment is a structured, time-limited clinical evaluation that uses standardized tools to produce a clear diagnostic picture — identifying what is present, what is driving your symptoms, and what treatment approach is most likely to be effective. Think of an assessment as the foundation that makes therapy more purposeful and precise. Many clients find that completing an assessment before or during therapy significantly accelerates their progress because the work is no longer built on assumptions.
2. Who should consider a psychological assessment?
Anyone who is experiencing symptoms that feel unclear, persistent, or poorly understood is a strong candidate for an assessment. This includes individuals who have been struggling with anxiety, depression, mood instability, or behavioral challenges without a clear diagnosis. Parents who have concerns about their child’s development, learning, or social functioning. Adults who suspect they may be neurodivergent and have never been formally evaluated. Anyone who has tried multiple treatments without finding one that works — and wants to understand why. And anyone who simply wants a clearer, more accurate picture of how their mind works and what kind of support would serve them best.
3. How long does a psychological assessment take?
The timeline varies depending on the type of assessment being conducted and the complexity of the presentation. Most assessments involve an initial consultation, one or more testing sessions that typically run between 60 and 90 minutes each, and a follow-up session to review findings and recommendations. The full process generally takes between two and four weeks from initial consultation to results review. Your clinician will give you a clear timeline specific to your assessment at the outset so you know exactly what to expect.
4. What happens after I receive my assessment results?
Your results are never handed to you in a report and left for you to interpret alone. Your clinician will walk you through your findings in detail — explaining what the results indicate, what patterns emerged, and what they mean in the context of your specific history and goals. You will also receive concrete recommendations for treatment, therapy, and any relevant follow-up care. For many clients, this conversation is one of the most meaningful parts of the entire process — the moment when years of confusion finally have a clear and accurate explanation.
5. Is a psychological assessment covered by insurance?
TrueMe® Counseling is a private pay practice, which means we do not bill insurance directly. However, your plan may include out-of-network benefits that partially reimburse the cost of assessment services. We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to confirm your out-of-network benefits before scheduling. We are also happy to provide documentation that supports reimbursement claims. If you have questions about fees or payment options, please reach out and we will walk you through everything you need to know.
